| Domain Names:
A good domain name will attract customers, presently the supply is running out as the list of available domains becomes exhausted. Always ensure that your name is submitted as the registrant otherwise you may have no legal title to the domain name. Domains are free! This caption can be seen all over the internet but it is rarely true. What is actually free is for the domain name company to process your request. You will still have to pay the subscription fees to interNIC or Nominet. The main draw back is that these 'free' companies charge you whenever you want to alter your domain's setting such as transfering it to another ISP (internet service provider). What is a 'hit' Nobody really knows what a 'hit' actually is. When you hear quotes of 100,000 hits per week etc you may be impressed. Knowing the truth is another matter. The majority of people assume a hit is a visitor attending your site. This of course would be a good indicator of how many people are interested in your site. Only very rarely though is this definition quoted publically. The typical definition quoted is actually the number of requests for data from the internet server. For example, this page is based on frames. There are three windows , so together with the frameset that counts as four html documents. Therefore a person visiting this page will activate four page hits. So already this one visitor has given my site four hits. Now imagine they browse through five different screens, each of which is a frameset. Thats now 4 x 5 hits = 20 hits....just from one casual browser. This isn't the end of it though. Before I mentioned that a hit was a request for data. Each picture element counts as a hit also. With only one picture in each window of a frame set we can multiply the hit number by 2. The more pictures or elements the better. So now 20 page hits x (nos of element s in each page) = lots of hits. Other ways to increase your statisitics are to have lots of short pages which require further clicking (which produces more hits). So , 1 visitor may easily generate 40 or more hits to a site. Examples of this are those travel agent type sites who quote millions of hits but very little in the way of sales. Basically a user generates lots of hits by going backward and forward through a few pages checking different destinations or dates. This effect is magnified when the site in question has little available as more searching is required to discover what you want. The personality of a web designer Web designers come from two backgrounds, computer programmers and graphic artists. Computer programmers like to make pages with bare code and not use those easy to use packages like Dreamweaver, Golive or dare I say it Frontpage. Pages produced by programmers tend to be less arty than those produced by graphic designers due to the mathmatical background of the former. Computer programs like to confuse people with jargon and talk about how ' clean their code is'. Now body forgot to tell them that people remember the painter, not the guy who made the canvas. As they code by hand they tend to produce bugs which will crash users browsers latter. Computer programmers don't like graphic designers and will try to convince you to believe the same with comments like' if he didn't have one of them WYSIWYG thingies on his Mac he couldn't code it!'' Graphic Designers tend to be a better choice, you'll get a nice attractive design with minimum fuss and the added bonus of no technowaffle. |
