With ineffective toothbrushing plaque builds up around the teeth and gums. The gums become red and inflammed and will bleed while toothbrushing. |

As the plaque builds up it becomes hardened to form calculus. This substance is light yellow in colour and cannot be removed easily. Usually a visit to the hygienist is required in order to clear it. |
After several years of neglect the gums will start to shrink back exposing the root surfaces. The teeth may become sensitive at this point as the dentin will loose the outer covering of cementum. |

If the state of poor oral hygiene continues bone is lost beneath the gum. The lower incisor teeth are particulary at risk as the bone is thinner on the front surface. Many patients discover this too late, only attending the dentist once the teeth are mobile. |
